“You’re already now seeing children die [of whooping cough] in states where you haven’t had a child death in years.”
—Dr. Paul A. Offit, an American pediatrician and specialist in immunology
The DTP vaccine controversy has a complex legacy. Through grassroots advocacy campaigns, concerned parents lobbied their representatives. As a result, a safer pertussis vaccine was introduced in the 1990s, and vaccine safety regulations were improved.
However, the controversy ignited a firestorm of negative publicity over vaccines, turning the tide of public opinion over vaccine mandates. What had once been a nationally-celebrated achievement of Betty Bumpers and Rosalynn Carter was now viewed as an infringement of personal liberty. This contentious debate reflected the tremulous balance between the individual right to choose and the shared responsibility of the common good.

Subsequent vaccine controversies (e.g., MMR and COVID) followed the same playbook, gradually eroding vaccine mandates.

Amidst the return of vaccine-preventable diseases, it is more urgent than ever to reevaluate what caused America to turn away from vaccines in the first place. One must not let the children of today suffer their great-grandparents’ diseases.
